Altar Servers Picnic
by: Haley Chan
Last Monday seemed like a typical Monday for many of you: white button down shirts and red sweaters, but for a select few, it was a day of free dress. On Monday, our school’s altar servers went on a picnic to celebrate all the times we served at church, whether it was a school day or a weekend. The picnic was a fun event that included many activities: baseball, water fights, volleyball, a barbeque, and of course, just chilling. The barbecue consisted of juicy watermelon, potato salad, hot dogs, hamburgers, chips, and refreshing strawberry lemonade. If you want to be involved with the next altar server picnic and are in grades fourth to seventh, ask your teachers about becoming an altar server next year.
Second Grade First Holy Communion!
by: Elise Wong
We are very proud of the second grade for getting their first communion! First communion is a commonly used name for receiving the sacrament of the Eucharist. Communion is the third of the seven sacraments. During first communion, wearing special clothes symbolizes purity in most cultures. The girls often wear fancy dresses and veils that are attached to a wreath of flowers on their head. The boys usually wear suits or tuxedos for communion. The whole school is very proud of them for taking their next step in their catholic lives. We are also very thankful for Mrs. Alioto, who played a major role in setting everything up. We are very happy for you, second graders!

Last Thursday, the 8th graders received the sacrament of confirmation. During this sacrament, they are sealed with the Holy Spirit and are strengthened in their lives as Christians. We must remember that they have received the spiritual seal or the spirit of wisdom, understanding, and courage. God the father has marked all of us with a sign. Christ the Lord has placed his pledge and the spirit in their hearts.

Stations of the Cross
by: Elise Wong
Recently, the third graders held a prayer service to celebrate the stations of the cross. They held pictures of the stations while another told us about the station and what was happening. The third graders explained the stations wonderfully and gave us detailed visuals. There were two soldiers that took the visuals of the station to where that station was around the church. The third graders showed and explained the stations excellently. They taught us about the stations of the cross in an interesting way.
What's Happening in the Church
by: Elise Wong
There are many new things that are going on in the parish! First, there is a movie night this Friday on March 4, 2016. There is also a matinee on Saturday March 5, 2016 at the church. The movie that is being shown this Friday at the church is a part of Pope Francis’ 24 hours of the Lord. The movie is PG-13 and will be at 8 p.m. Popcorn is provided during the movie but you have to bring your own pillows and blankets. The coordinators are also recruiting people for the Christmas-Easter Orchestra so they can prepare for the Easter mass. There will be a retreat on March 12 at St. Patrick’s in Menlo Park. Menlo Park is 50 acres of Holy Land.
Strengthening Our Faith
by: Elise Wong
Recently, the 7th grade had a meeting with Father Dan in the Convent. The meeting focused on finding activities to do as a religious youth group. The aim is to build community and spirit to strengthen the 7th and 8th grade religious program. Some of the ideas that we came up with were having a bonfire, baking some cookies, or having a scavenger hunt. During the meeting, they gave us a list of some of the ideas that the 8th grade came up with like having a movie night, or going to Six Flags. The ideas will be evaluated and shared during 2016.
What's Going On In The Church

On October 3rd, the church hosted a Youth Faith on Fire event. The event lasted all day, and over 115 youths from California and New Jersey attended. About 60 people stayed at the convent, and they also gave $1,820 in donations. Finally, they bought $140 in raffle tickets. The event was a huge success! Also, on October 13, there was a tweet about the prayer vigil that Father Dan and Brother Justin led. The tweet said, “A prayer vigil for Canadian Audrey Carey. The three accused in her murder will be arraigned tomorrow."
What’s Going On In The Church

There are many interesting events coming up in the parish! The events include: the Stewardship program, the Star Bright program, Family Music Night, The St. Anne Youth Ministry group, and The Journey to Enlightenment. Many of these events are fun for both kids and adults.
One of the events going on is the Stewardship program. The Stewardship program helps us to recognize everything that God has given us and to use those gifts to serve God and our community. The motto for this program is “Reaching up with Hope”. The goal is for everyone to be aware of God’s blessings and to reach out and love one another. When you thank God, the hope is that you will find the path of happiness in your life.
Another program is the Star Bright program. The invitation was in the virtual envelope two weeks ago. Star Bright is a program to help athletic teams bond with each other. Their idea is to invite kids, parents, and coaches to the convent. The middle school kids will have a sleep over there. It will start Saturday, October 3rd at 5p.m. If you want more information, you can contact [email protected].
There will also be a Family Music Night. A man named Jun Alvar that plays at the 10:30 masses will be there. If you would like to see one of their practices, go to https://youtu.be/JQAr0-MwRnQ. Instruments used are flute, French horn, trombone, ukulele, piano, violin, bass, and clarinet. For more information, you can contact [email protected].
Another program is the St. Anne Youth Ministry which has monthly activities. They meet every Wednesday at 7p.m. and started their meetings during late June. One event that they have is on Saturday, October 3rd. They are going to have an event at Six Flags called On Fire. For more info, you can contact [email protected].
Finally, there is a program called The Journey to Enlightenment. One trip they are trying to plan is to Mission Carmel where Junipero Serra’s tomb is located. They are thinking of going there because Pope Francis had visited there to canonize Junipero Serra. If you are interested, contact [email protected]. We hope to see many St. Anne kids participate in the fun activities!

The Pope Comes to the U.S.
by: Haley Chan
Our current Pope, Pope Francis, was elected in March of 2013. Pope Francis’s original name was Jorge Mario Bergoglio. He chose the name Francis because Saint Francis was a man of poverty, a man of peace, and a man who loved and protected creation.
Pope Francis recently visited Cuba in Central America. He met several people as well as prayed in many churches. On September 21, 2015, Pope Francis arrived in Washington D.C. He will visit New York and Philadelphia, too. Over 2,000,000 people are expected to come see Pope Francis for his first visit in the USA. But, before the Pope came to visit, many security operations took place. According to the Washington Post, this is one of the United States’s largest security operations ever! Thousands of federal and local personnel, including the FBI, The U.S. Secret Service, Capitol Police, Coast Guard, Pentagon, and Federal Emergency Management Agency, will help keep the Pope safe.
Twitter is celebrating Pope Francis’s visit by releasing new emojis that can be accessed by using the hashtags: #PopeinUS, #PopeinDC, #PopeinNYC, #PopeinPhilly. Each will allow a picture of the Pope in front of the Liberty Bell, Statue of Liberty, U.S. Capital, or U.S. Flag.

Q: What do you think about the stewardship program?
A: I think it is great because stewardship is about becoming grateful and then giving back; being grateful for all that God has given and and then using those talents to share with others.
Q: Why are you excited about the STAR Bright program?
A: It’s exciting because it helps connect sports with faith and the school with the parish. It also builds teamwork outside of sports and helps build social friendship that way.
Q: What are your thoughts about the Family Music night?
A:That’s a lot of fun. It is almost like stewardship because people who like music can play instruments. Not only do they have fun, they can do it with others and they also are able to help the people in the church lift their hearts to God. They are also praising God at the same time.
Q: How are you feeling about the St. Anne Youth Ministry group?
A: I am excited. There are the graduates of 8th grade that are in high school. In their first meeting in the summer, about 20 of them showed up. Daniel, the youth minister, is very good with the kids. One of the activities is going to Six Flags. They were also planning to go to the Carmel Mission. The body of St. Junipero Serra is there and will be canonized by the pope. They are probably not going to go when Pope blesses the body.
Q: Are you excited about Brother Justin and his arrival? What is the most exciting thing you are looking forward to teaching Brother Justin?
A: Yes. 20 years ago I was in the same position as Brother Justin. The pastor at the time was training me to be a priest and now as the pastor, I can train someone else to be a priest. The best part of it is that I get to train him at the same place I got trained. I am excited to teach him because it is giving back. Someone taught me, and now I get to teach someone else. It is amazing that I ended up back here.
