Mrs. Meek is one of the seventh grade teachers and therefore teaches the entire Junior High. She was born in San Francisco, “A native,” as she phrases it, “and proud.” She went to St. Paul’s High School and then to SF State University where she majored in psychology. “It comes in handy dealing with teenagers” she joked, when asked about her choice. During college, she had a few jobs, one being a long distance telephone operator. “I was the weather girl. People would call in and I’d tell them the weather. I would tape all of the weather casts.”
Mrs. Meek has always wanted to be a teacher since first grade, she says, mostly because she had such wonderful teachers as a child. She has been teaching for 43 years, since 1973. Mrs. Meek loves teaching. “Every day is something different and exciting. It keeps you young.”
When she first started teaching, she taught 5th grade for two years. She then progressed to teaching 6th grade and later Junior High. Those first ten years of teaching were not your average 20-25 kid classes. The average number of children in each class ranged from 45-50 kids! In addition to this, fifth graders also switched classes, meaning she would have to teach about 90 kids per year! When asked how she remembered all of those names, Mrs. Meek just shook her head.
When she had a reunion with her very first class, the ‘kids’ were about 51 years old! “The funny thing is, I still remembered their names!” she exclaimed. Mrs. Meek has also been known to welcome past students back into her classrooms. “I love it when they visit” she said, remembering a few that had been by recently. All in all, it can be said, Mrs. Meek truly teaches to the extreme.
