Commissioners of Religious Affairs: Jesse Galang and Kenedi Edmunds
by: Elma Chuang
Commissioners of Religious Affairs organize and sponsor the religious going-ons around the school. Religious Affairs is one of the most active positions on Student Council because they constantly are planning events, such as the Thanksgiving Food Drive and the Lent school-wide activity. There are two commissioners, one for seventh and one for eighth grade. The commissioners must work together to write prayers and meet with Ms. Vollert when they are organizing a big project. Religious Affairs is truly an interesting position, and it digs deeper than the description. Here’s an interview with Kenedi Edmunds (seventh grade) and Jesse Galang (eighth grade), our current Commissioners of Religious Affairs:
~What motivated you to run for Commissioner of Religious Affairs?
Kenedi: My family and I are very dedicated Catholics. Since I was younger, I knew that I wanted to help the school, and I knew that I would do well with a religious job.
Jesse: I am an altar server, and I enjoy serving my school.
~Do you like your job? If so, why?
Kenedi: Yes, I feel that it is a good way to strengthen my relationship with God. I also learn skills that will be helpful for the rest of my life, such as organization and responsibility.
Jesse: Yes, because I get to write prayers and set up school wide projects.
~What’s your favorite part about being Religious Affairs?
Kenedi: My favorite part is having the opportunity to help the school which has done so much for me.
Jesse: I like saying the prayers during Student Council meetings.
~ Name five important qualities for your job.
Kenedi: time management, communication, responsibility, organization, and focus
Jesse: responsibility, maturity, organization, focus, and religious knowledge
~What is the most fun part of being Commissioner of Religious Affairs?
Kenedi: The most fun part is being able to do activities such as the Canned Food Drive and the Lent activity.
Jesse: You can organize school wide projects!
~Any advice for future commissioners?
Kenedi: My advice is to make sure to communicate with the other religious affairs commissioner, the Student Body President, and the moderators.
Jesse: Always write your prayers on time to prevent confusion and rush.
~Which qualities do you possess that make you a good Commissioner of Religious Affairs?
Kenedi: I always get my work done, I am good at writing prayers, and I communicate well.
Jesse: I am very good at making my own prayers.

Student Body Treasurer: Courtney Yee
by: Elma Chuang
This is a new part of the newspaper that will inform you about student council positions and what they do. If you are in sixth grade, this section will help you decide if and what position you want to run for. Even if you aren’t in sixth grade, you will hopefully find this section interesting. Each month, the interviews will be a person from a different position of Student Council. This month, the student council member of focus is the Treasurer, Courtney Yee.
~What motivated you to run for treasurer?
I wanted to run for treasurer because I wanted to give back to the school, and I liked math. Treasurer is fitting.
~Do you like being treasurer? If so, why?
Being the treasurer is an easy job most of the time, though it can be stressful when people yell at you for change at bake sales and having to run around giving reimbursements.
~What’s your favorite part about being treasurer?
My favorite part of being treasurer is getting to handle the money and knowing what’s in our bank account. Money is power, so, technically, I have a bit of power.
~ Name five important qualities for treasurer.
- Honesty
- Martial arts skill to protect thieves (aka your classmates) from stealing the money
- Organization (so you don’t lose important papers)
- Good memory (so you don’t forget if someone tells you they owe you)
- A lot of time on your hands so you can finish tasks completely
The best part is getting to count all the money.
~Any advice for future treasurers?
The future treasurer should keep a journal of IOUs and things that people need from them.
~Which qualities do you possess that make you a good treasurer?
I can get things done quickly (efficient). I have legible handwriting, so anyone can read my numbers/writing.
